"Gaṇeśaḥ Smaryatāṃ Mune" - Śrī Vināyaka Chaturthī Mananam 2026

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Introduction

On the occasion of Vināyaka Chaturthi 2026, let us revisit that wondrous moment in time beyond time.

The universe of the Mahābhārata had already been born in the mind of Bhagavān Vyāsa, waiting to emanate into words so that generations across the ages could receive it, live by it, and drink deeply from its inexhaustible wisdom.

But who could read the mind of Bhagavān Vyāsa? And who could possibly match the speed of his thought with the speed of the written word?

Brahmājī Himself had the answer: Gaṇeśaḥ smaryatāṃ mune, “O Muni, invoke Gaṇeśa.”

And so Bhagavān Vyāsa remembered Him.

Our sweet Swāmi, Śrī Mahāgaṇapati, appeared before Bhagavān Vyāsa. Vyāsa worshipped Him, offered Him a seat, and placed before Him an extraordinary prārthanā: become the lekhaka, the scribe, through whose divine hand the Mahābhārata would enter this world and remain for the ages to come.

And Śrī Mahāgaṇapati agreed.

Bhagavān Sri Brahmā’s instruction to Vyāsa

kāvyasya lekhanārthāya gaṇeśaḥ smaryatāṃ mune |

“O Sage, for the purpose of writing down this great composition (kāvyasya lekhanārthāya), let Gaṇeśa be remembered and invoked (gaṇeśaḥ smaryatām).”

Sauti narrates

tataḥ sasmāra herambaṃ vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ || 1.1.111 ||

Then Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī (satyavatīsutaḥ), remembered Heramba, Gaṇeśa (sasmāra herambam).

smṛtamātro gaṇeśāno bhaktacintitapūrakaḥ |
tatrājagāma vighneśo vedavyāso yataḥ sthitaḥ || 1.1.112 ||

The moment he was remembered (smṛtamātraḥ), Gaṇeśa, the fulfiller of what his devotees contemplate and seek (bhaktacintitapūrakaḥ), came to the very place where Vedavyāsa was seated.

Sri Vyāsa addresses Sri Gaṇeśa

pūjitaś copaviṣṭaś ca vyāsenoktas tadānagha |
lekhako bhāratasyāsya bhava tvaṃ gaṇanāyaka |
mayaiva procyamānasya manasā kalpitasya ca || 1.1.113 ||

Having been duly worshipped and seated (pūjitaś copaviṣṭaś ca), Gaṇeśa was addressed by Vyāsa:

“O Gaṇanāyaka, become the scribe (lekhakaḥ) of this Bhārata, conceived in my mind (manasā kalpitasya) and dictated by me (mayaiva procyamānasya).”

Gaṇeśa replies with his condition

śrutvaitat prāha vighneśo yadi me lekhanī kṣaṇam |
likhato nāvatiṣṭheta tadā syāṃ lekhako hy aham || 1.1.114 ||

Hearing this, Vighneśa replied:

“If, while I am writing, my pen does not stop even for a moment (lekhanī kṣaṇaṃ nāvatiṣṭheta), then indeed I shall become your scribe (lekhako hy aham).”

In other words, Vyāsa must dictate continuously. Gaṇeśa will not wait for him to compose.

Vyāsa gives his counter-condition

vyāso ’py uvāca taṃ devam abuddhvā mā likha kvacit |
om ity uktvā gaṇeśo ’pi babhūva kila lekhakaḥ || 1.1.115 ||

Vyāsa, in turn, said to the Deva:

“Never write anything without first internalizing it (abuddhvā mā likha kvacit).”

Gaṇeśa replied, “Om,” accepting the condition, and thus became the scribe (babhūva kila lekhakaḥ).

Vyāsa’s ingenious solution

granthagranthiṃ tadā cakre munir gūḍhaṃ kutūhalāt |
yasmin pratijñayā prāha munir dvaipāyanas tv idam || 1.1.116 ||

Then the sage, with ingenuity, composed intricate and deeply concealed textual knots (granthagranthim... gūḍham). Concerning these, the sage Dvaipāyana made the following declaration (pratijñayā prāha).

The key expression is granthagranthim. Literally, a “knot in the composition.” Vyāsa creates verses whose meaning is sufficiently subtle and difficult that Gaṇeśa must stop to understand (i.e dwell upon them) before writing them.

Because Sri Gaṇeśa himself has accepted Sri Vyāsa’s condition, abuddhvā mā likha kvacit, that interval gives Vyāsa time to compose the verses that follow.

Sri Vyāsa thus uses granthagranthi, deliberately intricate verses, to reconcile the two conditions. These verses that appear at varying intervals, and are still knots that we encounter....😀🙏

May Bhagavān Vyāsa and Bhagavān Sri Mahāganapathi, ever inspire us, to rise above the play of gunās, and be forever devoted to Paramātma, for pure bhakti's sake....love for love's sake..
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
