sa ca bhagavān jñānaiśvarya-śakti-bala-vīrya-tejobhiḥ sadā sampannas triguṇātmikāṃ vaiṣṇavīṃ svāṃ māyāṃ mūla-prakṛtiṃ vaśīkṛtya, ajo 'vyayo bhūtānām īśvaro nitya-śuddha-buddha-mukta-svabhāvo 'pi san, sva-māyayā dehavān iva jāta iva ca lokānugrahaṃ kurvan lakṣyate | sva-prayojanābhāve 'pi bhūtānujighṛkṣayā vaidikaṃ hi dharma-dvayam arjunāya śoka-moha-mahodadhau nimagnāya upadideśa guṇādhikair hi gṛhīto 'nuṣṭhīyamānaś ca dharmaḥ pracayaṃ gamiṣyatīti | taṃ dharmaṃ bhagavatā yathopadiṣṭaṃ veda-vyāsaḥ sarvajño bhagavān gītākhyaiḥ saptabhiḥ śloka-śatair upanibabandha |

tad idaṃ gītā-śāstraṃ samasta-vedārtha-sāra-saṅgraha-bhūtaṃ durvijñayārthaṃ tad-arthāviṣkaraṇāya anekair vivṛta-pada-padārtha-vākya-vākyārtha-nyāyam api atyanta-viruddhānekārthatvena laukikair gṛhyamāṇam upalabhyāhaṃ vivekato 'rtha-nirdhāraṇārthaṃ saṃkṣepato vivaraṇaṃ kariṣyāmi |

tasya asya gītā-śāstrasya saṃkṣepataḥ prayojanaṃ paraṃ niḥśreyasaṃ sa-hetukasya saṃsārasya atyantoparama-lakṣaṇam | tac ca sarva-karma-sannyāsa-pūrvakād ātma-jñāna-niṣṭhā-rūpād dharmād bhavati | tathā imam eva gītārtha-dharmam uddiśya bhagavataivoktam | sa hi dharmaḥ suparyāpto brahmaṇaḥ pada-vedane [Mbh 14.16.12] ity anugītāsu | tatraiva coktaṃ - naiva dharmī na cādharmī na caiva hi śubhāśubhī [Mbh 14.19.7], yaḥ syād ekāyane līnas tūṣṇīṃ kiṃcid acintayan [Mbh 14.19.1], jñānaṃ saṃnyāsa-lakṣaṇam [Mbh 14.43.26] iti ca | ihāpi cānte uktam arjunāya - sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṃ śaraṇaṃ vraja [Gītā 18.66] iti |

abhyudayārtho 'pi yaḥ pravṛtti-lakṣaṇo dharmo varṇān āśramāṃś coddiśya vihitaḥ sa devādi-sthāna-prāpti-hetur api san, īśvarārpaṇa-buddhyānuṣṭhīyamānaḥ sattva-śuddhaye bhavati phalābhisandhi-varjitaḥ | śuddha-sattvasya ca jñāna-niṣṭhāyogyatā-prāpti-dvāreṇa jñānotpatti-hetutvena ca niḥśreyasa-hetutvam api pratipadyate | tathā cemam evārtham abhisandhāya vakṣyati brahmaṇy ādhāya karmāṇi [Gītā 5.10], yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṃ tyaktvātma-śuddhaye [Gītā 5.11] iti |

imaṃ dviprakāraṃ dharmaṃ niḥśreyasa-prayojanam | paramārtha-tattvaṃ ca vāsudevākhyaṃ para-brahmābhidheya-bhūtaṃ viśeṣataḥ abhivyañjayad viśiṣṭa-prayojana-sambandhābhidheyavad gītā-śāstram | yatas tad-artha-vijñānena samasta-puruṣārtha-siddhiḥ | ataḥ tad-vivaraṇe yatnaḥ kriyate mayā ||

Katha Upanisad Introduction

Aum Namo Bhagavathey Vaivasvathaaya Mruthyave brahmavidyAchAryAya nachiketase cha. 
Salutation to Bhagavan Yama (death), son of the Sun (Vivasvan) and the imparter of Brahma Vidya to Nachiketa. 

sadher-dhAtor-visarana-gati-avasAdanArthasya upa-ni-poorvasya kvippratyayAntasya roopam upanisad iti. Upanisacchabdena ca vyAchikhyAsitagrantha pratipAdyavedya vastuvisayA vidyA ucyate.

The word upanisad is derived by adding upa (near) and ni (with certainty) as prefixes and kvip as a suffix to the root sad, meaning to split up (destroy), go (reach, attain), or loosen. And by the word upanisad is denoted the knowledge of the knowable entity, presented in the book that is going to be explained.

ajamapi janiyogaṃ prāpadaiścaryayogā-
dagati ca gatimatāṃ prāpadekaṃ hyanekam |
vividhaviṣayadharmagnāhimugdhekṣaṇānāṃ
praṇatabhayavihantṛ brahma yattannato'smi || 1 ||

1. I bow to that Brahman, the destroyer of all fear of those who take shelter under It,—which, though unborn, appears to be associated with birth through Its (inscrutable and indescribable) power (of knowledge and activity); which, though ever at rest, appears to be moving; and which, though non-dual, appears to have assumed multifarious forms to those whose vision is deluded by the perception of endless objects and their attributes.

prajñā vaiśākha vedhak-ṣubhita-jalanidher vedanāmno'ntarasthaṃ
bhūtānyā lokya magnānya virata jananagnāh-aghore samudne |
kāruṇyād uddadhāramṛtam idam amarair durlabhaṃ bhūtahetor yastaṃ pūjyābhi pūjyaṃ parama gurumamuṃ pāda pātair nato'smi || 2 ||

2. I prostrate to the feet of that Great Teacher, the most adored among the adorable, who,—out of sheer compassion for the beings drowned in the deep ocean of the world, infested with the terrible sharks of incessant births (and deaths),—rescued, for the benefit of all, this nectar, hardly obtainable even by the gods, from the innermost depths of the ocean of the Vedas by churning it with the (churning) rod of his illumined reason.

yatprajñālokabhāsā pratihatimagamatsvāntamohāndhakāre
majjonmajjacca ghore hyamakṛdupajanodanvati trāsane me |
yatpādāvāśritānāṃ śrutiśamavinayaprāptiragyā hyamoghā
tatpādau pāvanīyo bhavabhayavinudau sarvabhāvairnamasye || 3 ||

3. I make obeisance with my whole being to those holy feet—the dispellers of the fear of this chain of births and deaths—of my great teacher who, through the light of his illumined reason, destroyed the darkness of delusion enveloping my mind; who destroyed for ever my (notions of) appearance and disappearance in this terrible ocean of innumerable births and deaths; and who makes all others also that take shelter at his feet, attain to the unfailing knowledge of Scriptures, peace and the state of perfect non-differentiation.

The means to the attainment of immortality is the knowledge of the Self which is the supreme Reality beyond all names, forms, and actions.

There is no possibility of continuance of ignorance when knowledge dawns

Salutation to that (Brahman) which is of the nature of consciousness, from which this whole universe was born, into which it gets dissolved, and by which this is sustained.

yair ime gurubhiḥ pūrvaṃ padavākyapramāṇataḥ /
vyākhyātāḥ sarvavedāntās tān nityaṃ praṇato 'smy aham // 2

I bow down ever before those adorable Teachers by whom was explained this Upanisad in the past, by taking into consideration the words, the sentences, and the means of valid knowledge.

taittirīyakasārasya mayācāryaprasādataḥ /
vispaṣṭārtharucīnāṃ hi vyākhyeyaṃ sampraṇīyate // 3

With the grace of my Teacher, and for the benefit of those who prefer a clear exposition, I compose this explanation of this Upanisad that is the essence of (that section of the Vedas, called) the Taittireeya.

Chandogya Upanisad Introduction

advaita Atma satyAbhi sandhasya taskarasya iva tapotaparasugrahane bandhadAhAbhAvah samsAra dukkha nivrttih mokshasca. 

For the aspirant after the truth of the nondual Reality of the Self (Advaita Atma satyAbhisandhasya), there occurs cessation of worldly sorrows (samsara dukkha nivrtti) and achievement of Liberation (mosha), as in the case of the person who, not being a thief, does not get scalded by taking up a heated axe and gets absolved (see VI. 16. 1-3). 

Note: In ancient times there was a lie detector test, wherein the dishonest person’s hand would be scaled on touching a hot axe whereas an honest person’s hand will not be scalded, even though he touches the hot-axe. This simili is invoked in the Ch. Upanisad 6.16.1-3. So Bhagavatpada invokes that sloka’s meaning, to drive home the point that jnAna protects the jnAni, from worldly sorrows etc., whereas one inclined towards enjoyer ship of dualistic things (i.e. AjnAni), continues along the path of pursuit of desires and karma/UpAsana & get’s scalded (as it were due to worldly suffering). This is why Bhagavatpaada's next says : - 

na karma sahabhAvi advaitAtmadarsanam
For this very reason the realisation of the nondual Self cannot coexist with rites.

yat sarva viṣayātītaṃ tasmai sarvavide namaḥ

brahma satyaṃ jagan mithyet yevaṃrūpo viniścayaḥ
